This has increased the focus on alternative energy sources and lead to the introduction of building regulation targets for renewable energy contributions to all new homes, from sources such as solar thermal hot water systems and air sourced heat pumps (water & space heating), both of which prove extremely effective in domestic housing.

Improved thermal regulations have also resulted in building regulations introducing minimum standards for dwelling airtightness, increasing the prevalence of mechanical heat recovery ventilation systems, now regarded an essential component of any energy efficient , A-rated or passive home.

The introduction of water metering is also leading to an increased focus on water conservation and the utilisation of rainwater harvesting.
