System Build Capabilities

Sloping walls

Straight sloping walls can be achieved using Kingspan Century Building Systems. It should be taken into consideration that the more acute the angle of the slope, the less usable space is created within the building.

Openings aligned to the angle of the slope can be considered, however attention needs to be paid to practical issues such as their cleaning, opening and weathering.

In terms of cladding, certain types of cladding such as roof tiles require a minimum angle on which they can be installed (often installations of such materials are not suitable for angles of less than 30 degrees).

Metal panel claddings, slips, glass panels, timber and render, among others, can all be considered on sloping walls. Brick could be difficult. It is prudent before specifying to always check suitability of a particular material with the manufacturer.

Curved walls

Curved surfaces can be constructed in two ways: ideally faceting the curve using standard panels, or using laminated timber pre-cut to a particular curve.

Curve in more than one direction It is possible to curve timber frames in more than one direction, however, this will reflect on the economics of the project. Early consultations with Kingspan are essential so that the project can be steered in the right direction.

Depending on the radius of the curve, the surfaces could be faceted using materials such as metal and glass panels and timber. Curved metal panels, tiles and render could be used on non-faceted curves. In each case, the suitability of a particular material should be checked with the manufacturer before specifying it for a particular use.

Cantilevers

Cantilever are achievable in timber, however large projections and loadings may require the introduction of structural steel for support. Steel element will be integrated into the frame with propitiatory systems of preventing cold-bridging.

Openings

Kingspan systems can accommodate a whole range of openings, from standard rectangular to round, arched, curved, irregularly shaped, and corner openings.

Corner windows can be achieved in two ways:

  • by concealing the structure within the frame of the window, and
  • by cantilevering the section of the building above the window.

The openings in a curved wall can either be built to the curve or faceted to follow the curve. The size of the opening will be the main consideration when it comes to deciding which way to proceed. Glass can be bent to form a curve, however economics need to be taken into account  and weighed against other more affordable.

Bay Windows

A full range of bay windows can be accommodated by the structure.

Shown here are just three of limitless options to meet every design requirement.

Kingspan Century will provide the structural frame to suit your design, over which then the desired finish can be applied.  Careful detailing is required around the bays to avoid air leakage and water penetration.

Oriel Window

A full range of projecting oriel windows can be accommodated, from contemporary to traditional.  As these are to be cantilevered off the main structure, careful consideration is required in the engineering design

Balconies

A full range of styles of balconies are available along with many ways of structurally supporting them.  You need to consider how these are supported, reducing this risk of water ingress, and reducing possible cold bridging which is particularly associated with steel balconies.  Safety aspects need to be addressed, in particular, protection form falling.

Dormer Windows

With the increase in density requirements, rooms in the roof are becoming a popular choice to increase floor area without increasing the overall height of the building significantly.  Different  types of dormer windows can easily be incorporated into the frame and roof structure.
